jail for free — 6 months jail for dumpster divers

September 14, 2006 4:29 pm

this is an outrageous, but sadly true story… 2 men in their  20’s, one a social worker the other a yoga teacher, were given 6 month jail terms for jumping a fence to take some over ripe fruit and vegetables. Click on the link above to find out more about this felony crime — (yes, a FELONY!)

personality for free

September 12, 2006 12:35 pm

The title of this blog entry isn’t to suggest that you don’t have a personality, but if you want to analyze that thing, that persona, that essence that makes you, well, you, then read on…

The human resource departments of many large corporations have for decades now used the Myers Briggs personality test to determine how potential and actual employees might best be able have their talents utilized.  It’s a multiple choice test that can be done online (for FREE). Based on the principles of revered psychologist Carl Jung, you will be classified according to a system (eg. “ENFP”) that is based on 4 binary combinations, giving a total universe of 16 types.  Once you get your score, for want of a better word (say, “ISTJ”) google it and be amazed at how accurate Myers Briggs can be at assessing you, your strengths and weaknesses. More accurate than Milton Black!

Free(ish) vacations…

September 11, 2006 3:35 pm

The idea of travelling around your country or around the world and spending your time in a spacious and comfortable home is an appealing thought to a lot of potential travellers. Especially when it’s FREE. Or mostly free. A number of sites exist that will enable you to hook up with other like minded people and for a fee you can register and then seek out those who might want to swap a home or apartment with you. Here are a few sites:

corporate america embraces dumpster diving

September 7, 2006 12:46 pm

A few weeks ago bankrupt Northwest Airlines distributed a hardcopy pamphlet and posted on their website a list of tips to save money, one of them advised to not be  “shy about pulling something you like out of the trash.”  The article created quite a stir and the dumpster diving suggestion was ultimately removed.

Right here in little ‘ol Sydney

September 6, 2006 3:00 pm

is an amazing group (check out their website – squatspace.com) that was born from the Broadway Squats  in inner Sydney during the turn of the Millenium.  From living for free (squatting) they have branched out into showing art through an annual film festival, exhibiting art installations and, to top it off, a “re-cuisine machine dumpster cafe” opened in the squats!

“one man’s junk is another man’s art…”

September 5, 2006 1:26 pm

I found a site today that is a portal for artists who dumpster dive as a means to get materials for their art. They’re based in California so if you’re interested check out the site.  Here’s a statement of what they do…

The Dumpster Diversion Project supports artists & environmental education programs in the local communities within Contra Costa County and the surrounding areas by providing access to reused materials.”

the judge, his laywer and the prostitute

You never know what you’re going to find when you go searching in a bin unless of course you stake out bins in advance.  This following link details the account of a woman who found some interesting evidence in a bin of someone she knew…
